This study examined both the psychological and emotional and addiction aspects of the mental health of young adults, which has not been sufficiently considered in prior studies.
The mental health of young adults and child maltreatment were considered together, and latent profile analysis was used to clearly reflect the characteristics of child maltreatment.
The research questions for this purpose were as follows: First, how can child maltreatment be categorized by a latent profile analysis? and second, what is the difference in young adults mental health according to the types of child maltreatment classified in the latent profile analysis? For this, an online survey was conducted using questionnaire, and the data of 521 young adults aged 19-39 were analyzed with STATA 17.0 and Mplus 7.0. The results of the study were as follows: First, Using latent profile analysis, three child maltreatment profiles were identified: ¡®non-maltreatment + low maltreatment (76.2%, class 1)', ¡®physical abuse + emotional abuse (17.8%, class 2)', ¡®physical abuse + emotional abuse + neglect (physical, medical, education) (6.0%, class 3)'. Second, the difference in mental health in young adults was verified according to the classified child maltreatment type. Specifically, in terms of psychological and emotional aspects, members of class 1 had lower average levels of depression and loneliness and higher self-esteem than other groups that experienced maltreatment. On the other hand, in terms of addiction, members of class 3 had higher average levels of problem drinking, smartphone overdependence, and gambling problems than class 1 and class 2. In the conclusion, based on the research results, measures to improve the mental health of young adults are discussed.
